International Science Day (5.6.2011)

A part of the "Turku - Culture Capital of 2011" event is the appearance of all these festivals, lectures and musical performances that - at least - a lot of people in Turku has been blogging/writing/updating people about. Now that it's summer, all sorts of events are taking place.

Like the ISD, for example.

Held at the new congress center "Logomo", which is actually a renovated giant warehouse that used to belong to Turku train station,  we (me, Micke, Mimi+her boyfriend Tommy, and we met Pernilla once we got there) spent the morning and most of the afternoon listening to seminars held by some really awesome quantum physicists and artists.

ISD home page.
The seminars were a collaboration between the University of Turku, the Heriot-Watt University ( Edinburgh, UK), the École Normale Supérieure (Paris, France) and the University of Sussex (Brighton, UK), and it was sponsored by the Finnish Cultural Foundation (Science Workshop on Entanglement).

Logomo, the auditorium.
The theme was "Art meets Science", and all the organizers (I guess with Dr. Sabrina Maniscalco in the lead)had really done their best to bring in some of the brightest people in the field between quantum physics and art that touch upon it.

The physicists and artist/mathematicians present were
  • Prof. Kari Enqvist (Academy of Finland Professor, University of Helsinki) (Finland)
  • Prof. Serge Haroche (Collège de France Professor, CNRS Gold Medal Laureate, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris) (France)
  • Prof. Wolfgang Lange (Head of the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Group, University of Sussex, Brighton) (UK)
  • Dr. Hannu Rajaniemi (Author, Co-founder of ThinkTank Maths) (Finland/UK)
  • Prof. JoAnn Kuchera-Morin (Prof. of Media Arts and Technology and Music, Director of the AlloSphere, University of California, Santa Barbara) (US)
  • Anab Jain (Designer, Entrepreneur, and Founder of the design studio Superflux) (India/UK)
  • Dr. Colin Wright (Mathematician and Juggler) (UK)
  • Vi Hart (Recreational Mathemusician) (US)
