My progress in the Goodreads reading challenge of 2018

Image
So, I managed by April to read at least 25 books. That was my Goodreads challenge for this year , and unlike last year, I don't want to stress myself by changing the challenge to a larger number.  If you take into account that nearly all of these books have been read in the Amazon Kindle app, and thus also that I have bought them via Amazon, they represent how much money I've bought books for already this year. Since I'm still on child care welfare, the amount of money left for buying books is ridiculously low by now. And no, I don't have any savings left. The library and the net are the options left for me now...at least until the day I get a job. Out of these 27 books, " Love Minus Eighty" by Will McIntosh  is the one that's  going to be one of this year's most memorable books. I've had it on my Amazon wish list for 3 years now, and only went it suddenly went on sale for 3,71 dollars did I have the money to be able to buy it (I usually...

Biblophilic and crochetophilic

When I add books to the collections in my Librarything -account, the books pop up on  my Facebook-wall and here on my blog (in the left column). I think it's nifty that I can check which book I borrowed last from the library here on my blog, but I'm not so sure about Facebook. Or, if I'll be more precise, it's the "box" *  I find somewhat lacking. In settings. But I guess they're working hard on it, and Facebook isn't the friendliest platform to build software for. *   or whatever they want to call it, there's too many names for different parts of social network and databases nowadays. Gadgets, widgets, apps, boxes.... give me a break. On another book-related topic, I finally finally finally! got the book I'd requested from Turku city library. About that book... it's a pattern book, authored by this crochet designer whose designs I really like. Her name is Kristin Omdahl, and if you're on Ravelry you can find her and her designs ...

Library rat

Ah, how a trip of 30 min in the library can turn into a few hours of reading bliss at home. I'll just put them up on my "Borrowed from the Library"-list on LibraryThing, and then I get to see if the same authors have any other interesting books. I so love reading. Especially things of "no great importance", to quote my dear father. Dancing shoes-bag, library books, and all the other things a girl has in her handbag. Above, said things, only wet. Meeh. Crappy photo, I know, but what can you do, when you get home at 20:30 and you're soaked from the slush-rain that decided to prolong winter for a few days more? I'm sorry books, I know you're wet, but I'll dry you right away. Nobody likes crinkly pages.

Kids at Turku City Library

Image
Many daycare-group take their young charges to Turky City Library to lend books for the week. Some even stay for an hour or two to read. Here is a little group I managed to spot today. Some of the kids wanted to lend the books of the friends in their groups, so much fun are the lending machines! You see, at Turku City Library, kids have two lending machines of their own. At the top hole, you show the "lending robot" your library card and punch in your code, then you get to stuff your books - one at a time! - into the hole. As soon as the "lending robot" recognizes the book, it does this funny beep to let you know it's all right to put in the next book. Every book you borrow falls down at the back of that top hole, and you can pick them up at the hole at the bottom of the machine when your done. If something goes wrong (usually it's that you punch in the wrong code) , the machine instead does a "dooh!" much like Homer Simpson. Hilarious!

Turned loose at the library....

It's an unwritten rule that people are supposed to read the magazines that you find at your hairdresser, when you are sitting in their domain. * fact of life * Still, there is only so much Cosmopolitan or Me Naiset etc. that I manage to stomach before the laughter in my brain wants to make it out through my mouth. I mean, how am I supposed to read articles concerning "How to survive when your BFF grows up" or "Är din karl en mussla" (srsly! the last one is from the Swedish Cosmo, the December issue). I just had to quit before I made a fool of my self... I still have the worlds best hairdresser , though! I'll defend her with the steel in my sharp wit and the hard heels of my stilettos if needed   :) So, after partaking in the urban ritual that gets my hair to look nice again, I went to the library. Just to look, mind you. And I came home with the books you can see in the picture.... Finally! A copy of Stephenie Meyer's book "The Host" j...

Yesterday I went to the library

Turku has a lot of libraries, but the most magnificent is the new and improved city library. A few years back, when it was just the old building, I loved it because of how it smelled and how it felt to walk around inside it. Since the new wing opened to the public, and they finished the repairs on the old, the library have newer looked better. It changed overnight into a true "public room", and most of it is thanks to the lovely yellow chairs and the feeling of space. I never realized how cramped the old building was until I set foot in the new one. You can see all the way up to the third floor, as the architects opted for a "terrace-like" build with a grand stairwell in the middle of it all. The bookshelves in sturdy wood along with a lot of lights everywhere creates a really warm atmosphere. Perfect for reading. Anyway, I went to the library mainly to get away for a while. You know, get a little lost in space; become terra incognita . I read a book about knitting,...
