Stash update February 2019

Image
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I think this listing one stash update per month is a bit better than listing them each separately. I think it might make me more consistent with trying to stay under 40 euros a month on quilting supplies. First up; flea market finds. I know I want to quilt the Discovery and Defiant quilts by hand, and for that I would need fine  (preferably Perle) cotton thread. And I really lucked out! Last month I found those embroidery threads, and this months a whole plastic bag of Perle cottons! And the price was really good, too! I even lucked out with the choices of colors; white, pinks, violets and lilac. Perfect to use on both Discovery and Defiant. Then, some red and fabrics, that I can use for my "Red is for Rita" quilt. And then, because I asked nicely, my lovely husband bought me some more EPP supplies when he went shopping for car parts. (Comboliina flea market) 1,00    bag with lots of Perle cottons 3,00
Here’s my version of Block 5 in the Hand-Pieced QAL. Block info: the Dorothy-block, or Ohio Star block the dusky pink fabric and the brown fabric with the large flower prints were both  thrift store find and I had yardage of it in my stash. The solid brown and gold were from the stash at Arbis, and the white with golden details came from my FQ stash. block cut with regular rotary cutter + rulers, then sewn with Gutermann Mara 120 (100% polyester) in color 1. link to block construction post link to link-up blog post Info about my quilt, written in a previous blog post: I’ve decided that I’m going to call this quilt ”Discovery”, because I’m on this journey of discovering hand-sewing techniques during 2019...and incidentally also because I happened to be watching season 2 episode 2 of the Star Trek: Discovery series while I was choosing the final fabrics. Hand Pieced QAL 2019 - second set of blocks (1-4)
Image
Because I felt so down, from having to stay in bed so much due to the slipped disc in my spine, I cut out a second set of the same blocks for the Hand Pieced QAL. I'm not going to elaborate how much it hurt my back to cut out these. Needless to say, I was  pretty exhausted afterwards. This second set has pastel colors, where the ones for the Discovery-quilt has more warm brown and golden colors. In keeping with my impromptu theme for the Discovery, I'm calling this quilt "Defiant". That's also a name for a star ship in the Star Trek-universe - a sister ship to the famous Enterprise. And it starts with a D, just like Discovery. And it fits, since I've tried to defy the whole you-can't-really-sew-in-bed.  Turns out, you can. But you get sore arm muscles. (  #linneaeaquiltsDefiant2019 ) And your sewing studio looks like this: So, here's my version of the blocks for Defiant Block 1 Block info: the 16-patch
Hand Pieced QAL 2019 - block 4
Here’s my version of Block 4 in the Hand-Pieced QAL. Block info: the Quarter Square Triangles (QSTs) block, or the Four Hourglass blocks the dusky pink fabric and the brown fabric with the large flower prints were both  thrift store find and I had yardage of it in my stash. The solid brown and gold were from the stash at Arbis, and the white with golden details came from my FQ stash. block cut with regular rotary cutter + rulers, then sewn with Gutermann Mara 120 (100% polyester) in color 1. link to block construction post link to link-up blog post Because of my convalescence, this block's link-up was the first one I missed. And I knew I would run out of the original brown-with-gold-details fabric eventually. I had used it in making blocks 1, 2 and 3. It was this one:   But then, that Tuesday (a few days after I had spent the previous Friday and Saturday at the hospital) that I just NEEDED to go to my quilting class at Arbis, I checked the fabric st
What I’m working on: getting better
Image
This Friday didn’t start out so well. I slipped a disc in my spine when I was helping the kids getting dressed in the morning. The ambulance that came had to give me intravenous morphine via drip just to get me (trying not to scream too much from the pain) down our stairs in a wheelchair, since getting me out strapped to a stretcher wouldn’t have worked. Doctor at the hospital gave me 2 weeks of sick-leave. Since this is the second time for me getting a slipped disc, I know it will take longer (waaaay longer) than that to get better. So, instead of me getting to sit down on Friday and Saturday night with some peaceful handstitching, I get to spend some time in the hospital instead. Here’s to hoping your weekend started out better than mine! P.S. I saved the two empthy drip bags I got, just so my kids can get to play doctor with them on the dolls and teddies at home :P
