Craft courses 2018: Making jewelry from recycled materials, part 2

Image
So last Wednesday I was to the last lesson on this jewelry from recycled materials course. I wrote about it last week too . In excellent course theme in my opinion, and I only wished it could have been longer. Like I previously wrote, Anne Viinikka is an excellent teacher with a clear passion for using recycled materials. She's truly creative. Because of this, I thought I'd give you a peek at her work :) I took some photos of the show-and-tell pieces she had brought with her to present ideas and what she has done in different materials. Of these materials, she had used: inner rubber of a bicycle ring (her boys apparently bike a LOT) fabric scraps, yarn and thread leather scraps (from old bags, belts and jackets, some bought second hand and some just broken and reused) buttons zippers lace (stiffened with basic potato starch based glue) the plastic "glass" of old sunglasses old silver teaspoons old keyboard keys bottle caps Let's start wit...

Craft courses 2018: Making jewelry from recycled materials

I'm attending a short course at Vaasa Opisto , held by Anne Viinikka. It's about making jewelry from recycled materials. Only thing I don't like about the course is that it is TOO SHORT. I would have been more than fine with it lasting a whole semester, let alone the two days it's going to take! Anne is a great teacher, she's funny and her jewelry is inspirational. This was the first time in, well, I think it might have been at least three years since I've made some jewelry. And I noticed straight away how rusty my skill with the pliers were. *sigh*    Anyway, I had some specific projects in mind when I arrived to the course, and I got inspiration for one more when I saw the pieces Anne presented. The first was this necklace that I needed to put a clasp on. I've had it in a small plastic bag for nearly two years now, I think. Putting a clasp lock and a name-tag on went rather quickly. Why on Earth did I wait so long to do it? T...

What I'm working on: the Kingfisher quilt

Image
Oh happy day - the borders have been added! And I think they turned out great. I'm truly amazed by the fact that I - after reading up on color theory and then trying my best while also using an app tool to help - actually managed to create a quilt with a color palette that WORKS! Even the scrappy fabrics I've used for the hexie flowers work together well. On the overview photo some of them look a bit muted, and some of the oranges are so bright they shine, but close up the effect is much better.  Oranges, browns and red. With pink, and some odd greens, light blue and a few yellows. Writing that down makes it sound like an insane mix. The patterns on the fabrics are also an insane mix: florals, geometrics, polka dots, stripes, pastoral idylls and solids. Also, and in this I'm thankful for all the comments I got on Instagram for these photos, I noticed that I've chosen autumn colors. Without thinking. Visa det här...

What I'm working on: the Kingfisher quilt

Guess what? I sewed the the center together on two course lessons at Arbis! Here's two photos, one without any flowers on, and one with. I really like how it came together. Most points actually also match up - go me!  I only have 8 flowers left to do. Then I have 46. Wish me luck on those ;) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PLEASE ask permission BEFORE you PUBLICLY copy anything from my blog. The exception here is Pinterest, because I give you permission to pin my photos there IF YOU CITE THEM AS COMING FROM THIS BLOG AND THUS FROM ME. I understand that Pinterest is useful for saving tutorials and photos for quilting inspiration, because I use it that way myself, and I'm okay with you doing that too - but PLEASE: "cite when you write". Spring show 2018 at Arbis

" Vasa Arbis vårutställning 8.5.2018"   With the kids (still down with the flu but feeling better anyway) and my husband Mikael in tow, I tried to capture photos of as many of the beautiful handcrafted works I could, but I missed a lot of the woodwork pieces and croquis-paintings. My  sewing teacher Carola also wrote about the exhibit , on Instagram :) And she has more photos of the woodwork I wanted to see the different quilts and patchworks most of all, and I got photos of most of them. Myself, I had given six projects to my sewing course teacher to display in the show. At the last show, last fall, I only submitted one, and I thought that this time that it would be okay for me to submit more. Three of the projects were small (two small denim bags and the Fancy Fox mini-quilt) and three were larger (the Blue Roses and Denim quilt, the Fake cathedral windows quilt and  the Cars quilt ) All the works were displayed without any maker names, so I can’t tell you who ma...
