The 12 color block quilts

The 12 color block quilts-project of 2017-2019

Artist statement:

In January of 2017, I got this (at that time really mad!) quilting idea:

What about if I made 12 similar quilts,

and then practiced my free motion quilting on them

so they would all still seem so very different?

The first quilt tops, the "try-outs", got finished on the 29th of April that year, and were quilted and gifted in May.

Well, after that it took me almost 3 years to complete all the 12 other color block quilts for this mad project. Mainly because I slowly (oh so slowly on parental leave pay!) had to accumulated the money for the batting, backings and background fabrics I needed to complete them all.

I basically waited for a relative/fiend to announce that "we're getting a baby!" and then work on finishing on of the quilts for that child. Most of the children got them for their christenings, but the quilting on a few were a bit delayed and the child got theirs before they turned 6 months old.

What this project taught me - beyond learning to free motion quilt better - was the importance of quilt documentation, photography skills and the importance of sustainable quilting. And the importance of how costly a freely done and handmade gift for someone else can be.
